City of Cluj-Napoca hosts, until 14 July, the 59th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) where 615 participants will compete for the medals that will be awarded at the end of the competition.
President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, attended the opening ceremony in the Cluj Polyvalent Hall.
Klaus Iohannis: The fact that City of Cluj hosts the International Mathematical Olympiad is of great importance, considering that Romania organized the first edition of the competition in 1959. Only seven countries attended at that time, but today, with over 100 participating states, this event has become a competition in intelligence and creativity.
Ceremony was also attended by former Romanian PM Emil Boc, currently Mayor of Cluj, and current Minister of Education Valentin Popa. Deputy Prime Minister Ana Birchall wished young mathematicians good luck, on behalf of the Romanian Government.
According to RRA Correspondent in Cluj, Claudiu Pădurean, the 16-year-old son of Syrian President Hafez al Assad also attends the Olympiad, reason why special security measures have been taken.
