There are 433,000 Romanians officially registered in the United Kingdom, but most likely their number is higher, said, on Friday, Adina Bădescu, Head of Brexit Office of Romanian Foreign Ministry, in a debate on the impact of Britain's exit from the European Union, organized by the Office of the European Parliament in Romania.
An exit of Britain from the EU without an agreement is the most plausible scenario at the moment, but the London government has given assurances that the rights of European citizens will be protected.
At this moment, Romanians represent the second largest community of foreigners in the United Kingdom – said Adina Bădescu. The so-called contingency measures for a Brexit without an agreement have already been finalized and Romania is prepared, Bădescu added.
So far, 187,000 Romanian citizens have registered in UK for a new post Brexit status and the process continues, Romanian diplomat stated. Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs monitors the situation and provides consular assistance. At the same time, Brexit without an agreement might impact not only Romanian citizens residing in the UK, but also Romanian citizens in Romania, because for example there are over 200,000 Romanians who are related to the auto industry, and this will be directly affected by an exit without the agreement of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
In addition to that, from a political point of view, Romania after Brexit remains in the European Union without an ally with exactly the same positions regarding Russia, maintaining the sanctions regime or the Western Balkans.
