All large garrisons in Romania celebrate on 29 April Day of War Veterans. There are military and religious wreath-laying ceremonies at the monuments dedicated to World War II heroes, as well as solemn gatherings of war veterans, shows, military theme exhibitions, tending heroes’ monuments and cemeteries, all under coordination of the Ministry of Defense.
People who have attended these ceremonies this morning have evoked the role of those who have sacrificed their lives for the country. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has sent a message to the veterans, who contributed to the preservation of national values, to the formation and education of younger generations.
Head of State appreciates the way Romanian troops today carry out their missions in the theaters of operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Western Balkans, promoting Romania's security interests alongside its allies and strategic partners.
"Veterans Day is marked annually on April 29", starting from 2008, and reminds of the time when King Carol I officially recognized this title in 1902, at the request of Independence War survivors. In Romania, there are currently about 8300 veterans, about 250 war widows and some 63,000 war veterans' widows.
