January-June: Romania holds Presidency of the EU Council
Romania holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 January 2019 to 30 June 2019. Among top issues on the EU Agenda during Romania’s mandate: Brexit and negotiations for the new EU budget. Motto of Romania’s EU Presidency is “Cohesion as a European common value” and priorities have four pillars: Europe of convergence, Europe of safety, Europe – global actor and Europe of common values.
9 May, Europe Day: EU Summit in Sibiu
EU leaders are to gather in Sibiu on 9 May, six weeks after Brexit and two weeks before European Parliament elections. This will therefore be a crucial moment for EU Leaders to provide renewed confidence in the future of the new Union of 27, European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker said. Summit is to be attended by 27 Heads of State and Government from the EU Member States, 36 official delegations, 400 high-level guests.
23-26 May: European Elections
Every five years, EU citizens choose who represents them in the European Parliament, the directly-elected institution that defends their interests in the EU decision-making process. In February 2018, the European Parliament voted to decrease the number of MEPs from 751 to 705, after the United Kingdom withdraws from the European Union. Romania will have 33 seats in the European Parliament, one more compared to the last elections.
November-December 2019: Presidential Elections
Presidential elections in Romania will be held in November or December 2019. Current President, Klaus Iohannis, elected in 2014, is eligible for re-election.
