Romanian Health Ministry announces that 117 cases of West Nile virus infection are confirmed and the number of deaths has doubled in the last week, reaching 12.
One cannot speak of an epidemic at this time, the increase in the number of cases being generated by the rainy season, which made it difficult to destroy the mosquitoes that transmit the disease by stinging - said the President of the Romanian Society of Microbiology, Alexandru Rafila.
He recommended that citizens wear clothes that best cover their hair, use substances that apply to the skin and prevent mosquito bites and install window protectors.
Local authorities have to take measures to reduce mosquito populations, but this is only possible if individual households or basements of the buildings are very clean, preventing stagnant waters that favor the mosquitoes - said Alexandru Rafila .
