The parliament in Chisinau marked, on Saturday, for the first time, with a solemn sitting, the Day of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, which marks 103 years.
Deputies from the center-right parties, but also academic representatives and historians participated.
At the beginning of the event, the Romanian ambassador to Chisinau, Daniel Ionita, referred to the history, language and common traditions of the inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova and Romania and mentioned the support of the Romanian state both in the unstable period of 1917-1918, when the Country Council voted for the Union, as well as in the last 30 years after the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Moldova.
Daniel Ionita also referred to the support of almost 6 million euros that Romania offered to the Republic of Moldova during the COVID pandemic and mentioned an important support package, announced during the visit to Chisinau by President Klaus Iohannis.
Also, the President of the Romanian Academy and the President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova, Ioan-Aurel Pop and Ion Tighineanu, spoke about the significance of the Union and the importance of collaboration, including at scientific level, between Bucharest and Chisinau.
On March 27, 1918, the Country Council, the legislative body formed after the detachment of Bessarabia from the Russian Empire, voted for the Union with Romania, later recognized internationally, but not by the Soviet Union, which reoccupied this territory in 1940 following the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, signed with Nazi Germany.
